1. Caliban was educated on the island by miranda- This may be a big part of why he was so barbaric and wild. In schools in england during the 1600's students were expected to stay in line completely and to do what they were told. Teachers were very strict on students. Miranda most likely was not strict with her teachings so now caliban is mean with his words and swears.
2. Everyone who first sees caliban always mistakes him for a monster.-The appearance of people in the 1600's era was always very clean, pale, and kempt. He was none of the three while being very dirty, smelly, and hairy. This shows why all the charactors were frightened of him and thought he was a monster.

Caliban worships Stephano and Trinculo because he wants a better life.- This was probably considered very humorous by the audience because back then there started off being one legal church in england which was the Church of England. Also all religions in the area after the protestant reformation worshipped the same god.
4. Caliban loves alcohol and seems to do anything just to get more.- This is actually very common for the 1600's. In fact from 1600-1625 that there was much drunkeness throughout all classes of people from the lower to upper classes. This shows that alcohol was involved in much of the audience's everyday life.
5. Caliban is Prospero's servant/slave that he has do his dirty work.- This is also a part of the 1600's. Slavery was still not abolished in england until the 1830's. Some people knew that have slaves at the time was wrong, which could be were the parts of caliban's complaints of being taken advantage of have came from, but the majority still favored it.
6. Caliban thinks it is okay to violate Prospero's daughter miranda.- At this time women were not treated right or fairly whatsoever. There are some reports of rape from the time period, but I dont think thats what his purpose was. In this time men were expected to always be in control and he may have had a false read of affection from her and thought he should have control of her.
7. Caliban was an orphan on his island for a long time before anyone arrived.- Opanages were a very big problem in england in the times of shakespear. Orphanages were overfilled because of the death of parents or abandonning a child. Caliban was an orphan because his mom died, this might have been a message from shakespear saying that nothing good will come of leaving a child behind.
8. Caliban's mother was a witch who was often accused of performing black magic.- This was a common thought of people and people were accused of witchcraft frequently. The salem witch trials happened late in 1692
